What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it.

Teaching and Preaching: Jacob Abbott Etexts
Jacob Abbott, an influential early writer for children and an educator, was responsible for several popular nineteenth-century series for both boys and girls. Though he emphasized moral lessons, as was the norm for children's literature in his day, he is noted for the realism he brought to his depictions of children and their world, particularly in his popular and long-running Rollo series.
Abbott was born in Hallowell, Maine, on November 14, 1803. A professor of mathematics and natural philosophy, Abbott was ordained as a Congregationalist minister. He devoted more time to teaching than to the ministry, cofounding two schools. But from the 1830s, Abbott primarily taught through his writing.
Over a fifty-year span, Abbott wrote an estimated two hundred books, the majority of them for young readers.
Abbott died on October 31, 1879, in Farmington, Maine. Though his large literary output is now mostly out of print and forgotten, the etexts available on the Web offer at least a sampling of the work of this influential nineteenth-century educator and author.
